This is a graphic novel about a young girl named Raina, who is in 6th grade. Raina has an accident where she falls and damages her two front teeth. Raina’s has MANY dental appointments for many years to try and fix her teeth to get the perfect smile. During this time Raina learns the ends and outs of middle school and high school while juggling friendship, first love, and finding her niche in school. Eventually she does get braces to help get that perfect smile.

  1. Critical Review

The author Raina Telgemeier has written a memoir about herself. This book is a full color graphic novel. The illustrations show how Raina navigates from middle school to high school quickly through the story. Raina’s facial expressions add to the story. The reader can feel the anxiety and the frustration that Raina goes through as she lives through the drama of friendship, secret crushes, dental visits, and finding a group of friends to do school life with.

       4.Review Excerpts

Horn Book Guide, 10/01/2010

Told in graphic novel format, Telgemeier's memoir ably depicts one girl's journey through adolescence.

School Library Journal, 03/01/2010

Telgemeier's full-color artwork is confident and light, and her storytelling is appropriately paced. This straightforward and entertaining autobiographical comic is sure to please.

Publishers Weekly, 12/07/2009

A charming addition to the body of young adult literature that focuses on the trials and tribulations of the slightly nerdy girl.
