2. Plot Review

This is the story about a frog family who join forces to create a comic that will be published. These little frogs keep getting rejection letters but that does not stop them from creating new comics. The book is divided into chapters, and throughout the story each frog sibling shares their individual style of comic writing. There is also a news crew who is recording the activity of the Comic Club and how the frog siblings interact with one another. The story also shows how when one fails another is there to support their family member.

3. Critical Review

The author Dav Pilkey has created a graphic novel that is unlike the typical graphic novel. This is the third book in the series. The author uses photographs with props made from cardboard. There are illustrations made from pencil sketches and then other illustrations are created with bright colors. The author also uses clay figures to represent characters in the story and then photographs these characters and places them into the graphic novel template. The author has created the main story of a Comic Club. In this Comic Club each character gets to share their comic story in their very own chapter. So, this novel is an accumulation of several different stories of the Comic Club members, that show unique creations. It is like a story within a story.

4. Review Excerpts

Kirkus Review05/15/2022

Here exploring the concept of purpose, Pilkey lets characters and readers ponder its complexity—with butt jokes keeping the tone light. While its theme is not as clearly developed as the previous volume’s, this episode nevertheless presents the series’ now-trademark winning mix of sibling hijinks and club members’ comics, rendered in a variety of styles.

I could only locate 1 review and it was the same review from my 3 sources that I use for reviews.

5. Connections

  • Create your own comic. Using the comic page template.
  • Read Book 1 & 2 of Cat Kid Comic Club and Cat Kid Comic Club Perspective by Dave Pilkey
  • The main character in the story named Naomi wants her comic to be published because she wants to be rich. When she gets her rejection letter, she is extremely disappointed. Write about time that you worked hard on something and did not achieve what you wanted. How did you feel and what did you learn from your experience?
